Pruning methodsAfter the grape seedlings are potted, they need to be pruned first. After the new shoots sprout, they need to be observed first. The ones without inflorescences are nutrient branches, and the ones with inflorescences are fruiting branches. If inflorescence appears, leave 3-5 leaves on the inflorescence and pinch off the top. Since it is the first time to fruit, keep one fruit bunch and cut off the secondary bunch and one quarter of the whole bunch. Pinch off the developing branches when they have 3-5 leaves left, and pinch off the newly grown lateral shoots when they have 1-2 leaves left. Do the same treatment for the secondary and tertiary lateral shoots. When the grapes bear fruit, they need to be pruned back in winter, retaining about 2 branches with full buds and strong growth, and shortening them at 3-5 buds, while cutting off other branches at the same time. Do this every winter thereafter, leaving 2 fruiting branches and pruning each with 3-5 buds. After years of fruiting in potted grapes, the fruiting part will move upwards, resulting in a bare bottom. In this case, you can use the new shoots that sprout from the hidden buds at the bottom of the perennial branches and vines to cultivate new fruiting branches as a form of pinching and renewal. |
