How to sow dahlias

How to sow dahlias

Sowing time

Dahlias are generally sown in February and March of the year. The climate of this season is suitable for the growth of dahlias. Generally, they are sown in mid-to-late March when it is relatively warm. The daytime temperature should be kept between 15°C and 20°C, and the nighttime temperature should not be lower than twelve degrees.

Selection of soil and seeds

When growing dahlias, we should choose soil that is fine, unpolluted, nutrient-rich and free of pests and diseases. We can mix ordinary garden soil with wood ash, or we can mix it with garden soil, humus soil and some river sand of uniform coarseness and fineness. The soil prepared in this way is rich in nutrients, has a certain degree of looseness, has better drainage performance, and has an appropriate salinity. Note that the salinity of the soil for growing dahlias should not be too high. Before using the soil, if conditions permit, you can disinfect the soil with relevant agents first. Choose dahlia seeds with full grains. You can harvest seeds of dahlia varieties that are easy to bear fruit in the autumn of the previous year.

Sowing method

We spread the dahlia seeds evenly on the soil prepared for the flowers, and then spread the moistened fine soil evenly on the dahlia seeds. Then we can cover it with a layer of plastic film. There should be a little gap between this film and the soil, which is conducive to ventilation and can retain moisture and heat. After sowing, the temperature of the planting environment should be kept between 20°C and 25°C. After about seven days, the dahlia seeds will germinate. After that, water frequently to keep the soil moist. After sowing, the soil should be ventilated frequently and shade should be provided when the seeds are germinating. However, after the dahlias have emerged in an orderly manner, the plastic film should be removed and the plants should be moved to a sunny place for planting.
