How to save shallot seeds

Shallots are also called famous red onions, round onions, etc. They have seeds. When the onions are old, they will produce flowers on them. The black half-moon-shaped seeds of the plant are hidden in them. They can be harvested directly when they are mature.

Shallot seeds generally need to be sown as soon as they are harvested. When the seeds are mature, you can gently knock them off to remove the impurities inside. After washing, dry them in the sun, and then you can sow them.

Propagation of shallot seeds

Shallots can be propagated by seeds. The best time is between July and September. The survival rate is the highest when planted in late August, and the germination rate will be faster. If properly maintained, they will germinate about a week after sowing and can be harvested in 3-6 months.

How to grow shallot seeds

1. Site selection and land preparation

When planting shallots, you need to choose an area with sufficient sunlight, convenient irrigation and drainage, and loose and fertile soil. You can rotate water and land cultivation. Before planting, break up and harrow the soil, then build deep trenches and large ridges, and apply enough base fertilizer.

2. Sowing

Onion seeds can be sown in hole sowing. The row spacing can be controlled to 22*25 cm. The seed rate per mu can be about 50-90 kg. After sowing, the field should be watered once, and it is generally advisable to wet the surface of the bed.
