Remedial measures after wheat frost damage (causes and solutions for severe wheat frost damage)

Since the growing period of wheat seedlings is generally concentrated in spring, which is March and April of the following year, if frost damage occurs during this period, timely remediation is required.

Causes of winter wheat frost damage

1. Sudden drop in temperature

After wheat is sown, the temperature is high and lasts until around the beginning of winter. Then the temperature suddenly drops, such as snowfall or rain. Since wheat has not been tempered by cold temperatures after sowing, it is easy to suffer frost damage if the temperature drops directly.

2. Long-term cold wave and low temperature weather

This situation is that the low temperature weather lasts for a long time, and there are few sunny days with high temperatures. This causes the above-ground wheat seedlings to wither and die, causing frost damage.

3. Late spring cold

After the Chinese New Year, the temperature began to rise gradually. But suddenly a cold wave hit, and the wheat's ability to resist the cold was reduced, resulting in large-scale frost damage and seedling death.

Remedial measures for wheat frost damage

Suppressing the Wangmiao

Now is the best time to suppress vigorous seedlings. You can sprinkle an appropriate amount of quicklime in the vigorous seedling fields.

Lime is hygroscopic and has the functions of disinfecting and sterilizing the soil and preventing insects. But it has another benefit that few people know about, which is to increase the effective nitrogen in the soil and increase the release of organic phosphorus. It can also be sprayed as foliar fertilizer.

Remediation after the year

1. Apply nitrogen fertilizer in time to promote the rapid growth of small tillers

For wheat fields where the main stems and large tillers have been frozen to death, when the wheat is green and jointing, combine watering with application of jointing fertilizer, applying 10-15 kg/mu of urea.

2. Apply pesticides and turn green

Generally, only the leaves of frozen wheat fields are frozen and withered, and there is no dead tillering. In early spring, remedial spraying should be carried out to promote the greening of wheat seedlings, such as spraying potassium dihydrogen phosphate + brassinolide. Topdressing and watering should be carried out during the rising period to increase the tillering rate.

3. Strengthen fertilizer and water management in the middle and late stages to prevent premature aging

Frozen wheat fields are prone to premature aging in the later stages because the plants consume more nutrients.

On the basis of the first topdressing in spring, observe the growth and development of the wheat seedlings, and apply appropriate amount of foliar topdressing according to the needs of the wheat seedlings during the jointing stage or the flag-raising stage.

This can promote larger ears and more grains, increase grain weight, minimize frost damage losses, and increase wheat yields for the year.

Measures to prevent wheat frost damage

The most effective way to prevent wheat frost damage is to water it with freezing water. Watering it once before wintering can effectively prevent frost damage.

After watering, the ground temperature increases, and it can promote the development of the root system and increase the vitality of wheat. Generally, weak-growing fields can be watered early, and strong-growing fields can be watered later. In addition, if the soil moisture has been good, you can choose not to water.
