How to plant yam and when to plant yam

How to plant yam and when to plant yam

1. Planting time

Yams are usually planted in spring, and be careful not to plant them too late or too early. The time should be around April. If the temperature is unstable too early, it will affect germination; if it is too late, the temperature will be too high and management will be inconvenient.

2. Prepare seedlings

When planting, you must prepare good quality seedlings and choose those that are mature and large in size. Then cut a part from both ends, leaving about 10-15 cm small segments. Be sure to apply wood ash on the wound to disinfect it to avoid rot during the planting process, which will cause failure to sprout.

3. Planting Seedlings

Although yam has a certain degree of adaptability, it is more conducive to growth in land with loose soil and good air permeability. Just choose a plot of land and you can start planting. Dig a trench in advance, with a depth of 60 cm and a width of about 50 cm, place the seedlings in it, and fill it with soil to cover it. The soil should completely cover the seedlings to ensure better germination.

4. Scaffolding Management

After planting, water the seeds regularly, usually once every three days or so. The seedlings will take root and sprout in about a month. It is a climbing plant, so a frame must be set up in time. You need to build a frame next to the seedling and let it grow on the frame. In addition, if you want it to grow more vigorously, you must apply fertilizer in time and provide sufficient nutrients.
