How to pollinate potted lemons

How to pollinate potted lemons

Physiological structure

Generally speaking, lemon flowers are divided into two types, one is bisexual flowers and the other is male flowers. From this we can know that male flowers have no pistils or the pistils are degenerate, so they cannot bear fruit and can only be pollinated, while bisexual flowers can bear fruit, so artificial pollination also requires choosing bisexual flowers with pistils and stamens.

Pollination method

Artificial pollination is the process of transferring the pollen from the pistil to the stigma of the stamen. The same is true for artificial pollination of potted lemons. Use cotton swabs, brushes and other tools to dip the pollen on the pistil and place it on the stamens. In other words, the pollen on the surrounding stamens is artificially transferred to the stigma of the middle style.

Fruit management

Water before flowers

The main purpose of watering before flowering is to prevent rapid growth of branches in summer and to promote the accumulation of nutrients and healthy growth of flower buds. The specific steps of withholding water are to gradually reduce the amount of watering for the potted lemons ten days before the hottest summer days, until watering the plants is stopped five days before the hottest summer days.

Preserve flowers and fruits

This should be done after the lemon blossoms. Apply a thin layer of fertilizer once a week, and prune in time to thin out the flowers and fruits. It is important to note at this time that generally only one fruit is required on each branch.

Reasonable fertilization

According to the habits of lemon, it likes fertilizer, so it is always good to apply more thin fertilizer. Apply decomposed liquid fertilizer before the lemon plants sprout, and then apply liquid fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen fertilizer. This will promote the growth of branches and the germination of branches.
