How and when to plant broccoli

Broccoli Planting Time

Broccoli can be planted twice a year, mainly in March and July. If planted in mid-March, it can be harvested in June. If planted in early July, it can be harvested in mid-September. Since broccoli likes slightly cooler weather, the harvest in March will be more than that in July.

Planting Broccoli in Spring

Broccoli can be planted in spring in March. Broccoli has a high demand for sunlight. Good direct sunlight can make its flower heads more compact, but if the temperature is too high, it still needs shading. The temperature can be controlled at around 25 degrees. The amount of water required is relatively small in the early stage, and the soil must be kept moist after the flower heads grow.

Growing Broccoli in Summer

When planting broccoli in summer, it is best to control the direct sunlight time to about 6 hours in July. When the temperature exceeds 35 degrees, you must pay attention to heatstroke prevention, otherwise the broccoli will easily be sunburned.

Planting Broccoli in the Fall

When planting broccoli in autumn, you need to be prepared for top dressing. Top dressing is needed once a week after the seedlings emerge, and the second top dressing can be done after the flower balls grow to meet its growth needs.

How to grow broccoli

The soil for planting broccoli must be loose and fertile. The land for broccoli cannot be nourished by fertilizer, otherwise the broccoli will not grow well, it will be difficult to bear fruit, and the flower buds may even be loose. The soil must be deeply plowed.

1. Land preparation and fertilization: Broccoli grows fast and has a relatively high demand for fertilizer. It is necessary to apply sufficient base fertilizer to the land to improve the soil fertility.

2. Fertilizer and water management: Broccoli likes fertilizer and water, so it needs to be top-dressed appropriately and in stages. This will allow the flower head to grow rapidly. It has a greater demand for water during the rosette stage and the flower head formation stage, so it needs to be watered frequently. However, in rainy seasons or areas, remember to drain the water in time to avoid root rot.

3. Harvesting broccoli: Broccoli can be harvested before the flower buds open. Cut it about 10 cm below the flower head. After the flower head is picked, the plant will continue to grow and form side flower heads on the side branches. When the side flower heads grow to a certain size, they can also be harvested. Generally, they can be picked 2 to 3 times in a row.
