How to grow primrose

Breeding time

Primroses are mostly grown by sowing, and the most suitable sowing period is June to September. It can be planted at the end of June every year. The temperature is high in summer and the survival rate of transplanted seedlings is low, so certain care is needed and they should be placed in a cool place for management.

The temperature is not so high in August and September, so it is more convenient to cultivate at this time. However, the development period of primrose is short, the plant grows relatively short, and the flowering period is short. If it is not cultivated properly at this time, the ornamental value of primrose will be reduced. Therefore, it is most appropriate to sow the seeds directly when they are ripe.

Breeding techniques

When growing potted primroses, the seeds should be evenly sprinkled with fine sand, and then the surface should be compacted with smooth glass or template. This will help the seeds absorb nutrients and take root.

The seeds are small, so do not cover them with soil after sowing. Use the soaking method for irrigation. Submerge the potting soil halfway in water, wait for the soil in the pot to become moist, then place it in a cool place and cover it with glass. It will germinate within two weeks. Remove the glass and gradually increase its photosynthesis.

Soil selection

The potting soil for primrose should be a mixture of leaf mold, garden soil and a small amount of base fertilizer. The soil should be loose, fertile, slightly acidic with good ventilation and drainage, which is conducive to root development.

Transplanting to pots

Wait until 2-3 true leaves grow before transplanting. Choose a pot with a diameter of 7cm, which is the most suitable. After waiting for the seedlings to grow well, apply decomposed liquid fertilizer once a week. After one and a half months, change the pot to a 13-15cm pot.

During the flowering period of primrose, apply thin liquid fertilizer once a week and keep the soil moist, not too dry; in winter, excessive moisture in the soil will lead to reduced evaporation and absorption, which will cause root rot of the plant, so watering of the plant should be reduced.

It is difficult for primroses to survive the summer. If you want them to continue blooming next year, you should keep them in a safe place for a month. Repot the plants after the flowers fade and place them in a cool and ventilated place to prevent them from being exposed to the sun and wind, and reduce the amount of watering. When the weather is hot, you should sprinkle water on the ground to maintain a certain humidity and wait until the next year to care for it and let it bloom.
