How to propagate lily bulbs?

Lily is a flower that many people like. It is very beautiful when it blooms and has high ornamental value. When planting lilies, breeding operations are usually required. So how do you breed small bulbs of lilies? Let’s learn more about it below.

How to propagate lily bulbs?

1. Suitable bulbs

Lilies can be propagated using scales. During the propagation process, you need to find suitable bulbs. The bulbs must be fully mature, growing healthily, and free of disease. Then you can peel off the intact and relatively thick leaves on the outer layer of the bulbs.

2. Disinfection work

The peeled leaves must be disinfected. You can soak the scales in diluted bleach or alcohol for 3-5 minutes, then place them on toilet paper to absorb excess moisture on the scales, and then place them in a cool and ventilated place for about 1-2 days to allow the wound to dry fully to prevent it from rotting.

3. Reproduction

Prepare peat soil or nutrient soil, and make the nutrient soil a little moist, then prepare a ziplock bag and place the scales in the nutrient soil. After placing them, the ziplock bag cannot be completely closed, otherwise the airtightness will cause the scales to rot.

4. Post-maintenance

The packaged scales can be placed in a cool, ventilated place, preferably away from light. Basically, small balls will grow in more than a month, and one scale can grow many balls. But during this period, you must check the substrate in the bag frequently. If it is lacking water, you must replenish it in time, but the substrate must not be too wet. If it is too wet, pour it out and dry it in the sun, and then re-bag it when the moisture is appropriate.

5. Replanting

When the small bulbs on the bulbs grow roots, they can be replanted. Choose a substrate with good permeability, such as a seedling substrate or nutrient soil. Place the small bulbs with the roots facing down on the flower soil, and then cover them with soil. It is not recommended to cover too much soil in the early stage, 2-3 cm thick is enough. As the plant grows, you can fill the pot with soil at any time.

How else can lily bulbs be propagated?

1. Daughter bulb division

Lily plants will grow some small lily bulbs around the mother plant, and these small bulbs are the seedlings for reproduction. This method can save a lot of unnecessary processes and can directly enter the seedling maintenance mode.

2. Bulbous propagation

This method is not suitable for all lilies. It is only applicable to varieties that can grow small bulbs at the roots of the leaves, such as Asian lilies and Lilium lilies.
