How to propagate azaleas and how to achieve a high survival rate by cuttings

How to propagate azaleas and how to achieve a high survival rate by cuttings

1. Breeding Methods

1. Sowing: Harvest the seeds after they grow and mature, and sow them in spring in March or April. Wash the seeds first, then dry them in the sun, and it is best to disinfect them. Then mix some fine soil into the seeds, sprinkle it on the potting soil, cover it with soil, and cover it with a film.

2. Grafting: The time can be chosen from May to June. Use a 2-year-old Rhododendron australis as the rootstock. Cut a young shoot from the mother plant of Rhododendron australis. Keep the two pairs of leaves on the top and cut the base into a wedge shape. Cut the stem 2-3cm from the tip, cut the leaves, cut 1cm longitudinally and insert into one end of the wedge. Finally, tie it up with a plastic bag and keep it moisturized and out of the sun.

2. How to achieve high survival rate of cuttings

1. The cuttings are in good condition: When cutting, you should choose branches grown in the current year, about 6-10cm in length, and the cut should be smooth. Cut off the lower leaves and keep 3-4 leaves on the top. In order to make it take root better, dissolve the vitamin B12 and dip it in water. After it dries, you can use it for cuttings.

2. Suitable potting soil: The flowerpot should have good air permeability, and a clay pot can be used. For soil, you can mix river sand, horse manure and humus.

3. Cutting maintenance: Finally, insert the cuttings into the substrate to half or 1/3 of the depth, use a spray bottle to spray the soil thoroughly, and then cover it with plastic film to keep it moist.
