A complete guide to the propagation of Amaryllis

Growth habits of Amaryllis

Amaryllis needs a warm and humid growing environment. It does not like extreme heat, so the sunlight should not be too strong. It is best to keep it under a greenhouse. During the winter dormancy period of Amaryllis, the climate is cold and humid, so the temperature should be kept at 10~12℃ and not lower than 5℃.

How to propagate Amaryllis

Insert method

Since the seeds of Amaryllis are relatively large, they are suitable for spot sowing. The spacing between sowing is about two to three centimeters. During germination, the temperature should be kept within the range of 15 to 20℃, and seedlings will emerge within about 10 to 15 days. It takes two to three years from sowing to flowering.

Ball splitting method

The old bulbs of Amaryllis can produce two or three small bulbs every year. At this time, you just need to take the small bulbs off and plant them. So how do the bulblets reproduce? The method is manual ball cutting. Cut the mother bulb longitudinally and divide it into several parts. Then divide the middle part into two halves, so that the lower part has part of the bulb disk as the rooting part. Then plant it in the cutting bed and water it. After about 6 weeks, the bulb will produce one or two small balls and will take root in the lower part. After that, one mother bulb can produce nearly a hundred baby bulbs.

Cutting method

Cut the mother bulb of Amaryllis longitudinally into many pieces, then cut its scales and insert them obliquely into vermiculite or sand. Wait until it grows two true leaves before transplanting. If the potting soil is too loose when planting pseudobulbs, it will lead to delayed flowering or a reduction in the number of flowers. At this time, you can use sandy soil, a mixture of peat soil and sand for maintenance.
