How to Overwinter Canna - Direct Burial

How should cannas survive the winter? In fact, different regions have different ways of spending the winter. Basically, in areas south of the Yangtze River, because the light and temperature are more suitable, they can spend the winter outdoors. However, in areas north of the Yangtze River, the temperature and light are relatively poor. Please note that when growing cannas, you need to pay attention and take certain wintering measures.

The specific method of wintering is to cut off the old canna plants from the lower part of the stem before the frost falls, then apply some wood ash on the wound and let the wound dry. After about 3 days, the wound will have dried up and you can cover it with a layer of straw to keep it warm and protect it from frost damage. In addition, it can also play a certain moisturizing role. In addition to straw, you can also bury the plants directly with soil, but make sure the plants are breathable.

After the soil thaws in the spring of the second year, you can remove the covering, but you must keep a layer to prevent late spring frosts. In March and April, the seeds will sprout.

How cannas survive the winter - digging and burying

In northern regions, if the winter is very cold, cannas may be frozen if they are stored covered, so you can dig out the underground rhizomes and store them for the winter.

After the above-ground part of canna withers, cut it off, dig out the rhizomes, dry them in the sun, and then bury them in a ventilated place indoors, cover them with sand, maintain the temperature above 5°C, do not water them, and they can safely spend the winter.

Or you can choose a place outdoors that is sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, dig a hole and bury it. The depth is generally about 1m to 1.5m. Fill it with some straw and soil, and it can safely spend the winter.

After the temperature rises in the spring of the second year, it can be taken out and planted.
