Ivy cutting method

Ivy cutting method

Ivy is evergreen all year round and has beautiful leaves. It can be planted as a climbing plant or in a pot alone. It is a naturally beautiful vine. Ivy does not have high requirements for the growing environment and is a very easy plant to grow. It can be propagated by cuttings or layering, among which cuttings are more commonly used.

1. Cutting time

Ivy likes a warm environment. It is best to carry out cuttings in April-May in spring or August-September in autumn. The temperature at this time is around 20 degrees. When the temperature is suitable, its survival rate is relatively high.

2. Cutting steps

Before cutting, you need to prepare loose, breathable, and well-drained sandy soil. Perlite can be used as a substrate. Water appropriately before cutting to keep the soil moist. Also use tools such as chopsticks to dig a hole of appropriate size in the soil.

Cut a sturdy branch about 30 cm long from the mother plant of ivy. Make sure the leaves are intact and free of diseases and pests. After cutting, wrap the wound of the branch with a paper towel to prevent the moisture in the wound from evaporating too quickly.

When taking cuttings of ivy, place the branches into the soil with holes made in advance, then compact the soil of the ivy slightly, water it once, keep the substrate moist, and place it in a place with scattered light for maintenance.

3. Maintenance

After the ivy is cut, place it in a semi-shaded place and water it every two days. After a week, the number of waterings can be gradually reduced. Wait until the soil is dry before watering again. The room temperature should be controlled between 15-20 degrees Celsius. This temperature range is very suitable for the growth of ivy. The ivy will take root and sprout in about 15-20 days.
