Garlic cultivation time and method

Garlic cultivation time and method

Garlic, as an important condiment and vegetable , is widely grown and consumed around the world. Among them, my country has a long history of garlic cultivation and a complete industrial chain, and has good planting prospects. So what are the specific cultivation time and methods when planting garlic? Let’s learn more about it below.

Garlic cultivation time

Due to the cold winters in northern regions, garlic is usually sown in spring, and the sowing time is generally from March to April. The Yangtze River Basin and areas to its south are suitable for autumn sowing, and the sowing time is generally around mid-to-late September.

Garlic cultivation method

1. Site selection and land preparation

Garlic likes to grow in a flat, well-drained, deep, loose and fertile soil environment. After selecting a site, first clear the garden and plow the soil to a depth of more than 25 cm. After turning the soil, expose it to the sun for a few days to kill bacteria and insect eggs. When sowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly organic fertilizer and supplemented by compound fertilizer .

2. Seed selection and processing

Choose garlic seeds with well-developed root systems, plump cloves, and no damage or withering as sowing materials. Before sowing, you can remove small garlic cloves and peel off part of the garlic skin to promote rapid germination.

3. Planting method

Place the garlic cloves with the buds facing upwards, about 10-15 cm apart, 20-30 cm between rows, and at a planting depth of about 3-5 cm, making sure the garlic cloves are firm. After sowing, lightly cover with a thin layer of soil and water again to keep the soil moist.

4. Post-sowing management

(1) From the time the seedlings emerge to the time the soil freezes, the amount of irrigation needs to be controlled to prevent excessive humidity from affecting the growth of garlic. In droughts, small amounts of water should be used frequently.

(2) As the temperature drops, the bed surface needs to be covered with leaves, weeds, corn stalks, etc., and added in batches to keep warm to ensure that the garlic seedlings can safely overwinter.

(3) After the garlic turns green in spring, it is necessary to carry out tillage, weeding, topdressing and irrigation to promote the growth and development of garlic.

(4) During the entire growth period, close attention must be paid to and effective pest and disease control must be implemented to ensure the healthy growth of garlic.

5. Harvest and storage

The garlic is ready to harvest when its leaves begin to turn yellow and fall over. When harvesting, be careful to dig out the garlic bulbs to avoid damage. After harvesting, dry the garlic in a well-ventilated area until the skin is dry. Then store the dried garlic in a dry, ventilated and dark place.

In general, when planting garlic, you must master the correct planting time and method. Combined with scientific management, growers can achieve high yield and high quality of garlic to earn higher planting benefits.
