How to prune hibiscus

Hibiscus is very popular among people, but its ornamental value will be higher after pruning. It is necessary to trim off the branches that are too long and the branches that are too dense, overlapping, and long.

Generally, hibiscus flowers can be pruned in April, when the temperature is extremely suitable and the survival rate will be higher. When pruning, you should start from the following aspects:

1. Cutting overly long branches: After more than half a year of growth, the branches of hibiscus must have grown to different lengths. When pruning, you should first trim the overly long branches appropriately to make the plant look neater.

2. Prune branches that are too dense, too weak, crossed, or diseased: If you usually do micro-pruning on hibiscus flowers, you can skip this step. If you don’t usually do major pruning, you should also prune off diseased branches, weak branches, dense branches, crossed branches, inner branches, etc. to save nutrient consumption and give the remaining branches more opportunities to receive light and nutrient supply.

3. Plant shape: If the hibiscus plant shape is not round enough, with more strong branches in some places and fewer strong branches in others, you can properly prune the places with more strong branches to make the surrounding branches look more balanced and the plant shape more beautiful.

Hibiscus pruning grows fast

Prune the roots and branches of the hibiscus in time, and cut off the old, weak, and sick ones. This can avoid the differentiation of nutrients and allow more nutrients to be supplied to the plant, which can promote the germination of more new buds, and the leaves will be particularly green and the flowers will bloom vigorously.

Hibiscus pruning flowering

Hibiscus grows vigorously, especially the branches. If they develop too vigorously, the plant cannot bloom well, so it is necessary to prune away dense branches, overlapping branches, inner horizontal branches, inner branches, and parallel branches. It is also necessary to prune the top to control the height of the plant and avoid excessive growth.

Tips for pruning hibiscus

1. The pruning of hibiscus is divided into two parts. One is daily maintenance pruning, which can be done at any time. The other is the annual major pruning. It is recommended to prune after the leaves fall in autumn and before the new buds sprout in spring. If it does not shed leaves in winter, prune it before the new buds sprout in spring. If it sheds leaves, you can prune it after the leaves fall. During its vigorous growth period, light pruning is acceptable, but it is best not to prune it heavily.

2. When pruning the branches of hibiscus, generally cut off about 50-90 cm of branches. Do not cut too short or too many. After pruning, although the number of flowers will decrease in the first season, as long as normal maintenance and regular addition of fertilizer and water are carried out, the number of flowers will increase.

Hibiscus pruning cuttings

1. Choose branches that are relatively strong and should not have any insects on them. The length requirement is not high, about 10-15cm will be enough.

2. Soil: When preparing the soil, you should use soil with good air permeability and add some decomposed fertilizer. You can use ordinary pots for flowers, but you should put broken tiles at the bottom of the pots as a base.

3. Disinfection: The prepared soil must be disinfected in advance. It is recommended to spread the soil under the sun to eliminate the bacteria and insect eggs in the soil. The branches can be soaked in rooting water to promote rooting and germination of the plants.

4. Cuttings: The processed branches can be directly inserted into the flowerpot. If there are many branches in a flowerpot, you need to keep a good distance between them. After that, water them and place them in a cool place. They will grow roots in 30 days.
