How and when to plant bell peppers Planting techniques and management points

The best time to plant bell peppers

Bell peppers can be sown all year round, but the best planting time is from mid-to-late July to late December. If bell peppers are sown too early, more diseases and pests will appear. If they are sown too late, it will be difficult to build a high-yield rack before the severe winter when the light and temperature are good.

Bell pepper planting methods and key points

1. Seed treatment

Before sowing bell peppers, choose good quality seeds, soak them in 30°C warm water for about 12 hours, then soak them in potassium permanganate solution for about 15 minutes, take them out, clean them, and place them in a well-ventilated place to dry.

2. Prepare the soil

When planting bell peppers, you should choose a plot with deep soil, fertile soil, good drainage, and where the previous crop is not a Solanaceae crop. Before sowing, apply decomposed organic fertilizer and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium triple compound fertilizer as base fertilizer, then deep plow the soil and level it to make ridges.

3. Planting method

About 1 day before sowing, the seedbed can be watered once, and 10g of seeds can be sown per square meter of the seedbed. After sowing, cover it with a 1 cm thick layer of soil and then cover it with ground film, and build a small arch shed. When the seedlings grow to 5-7 true leaves, harden them for 3-5 days before transplanting.

Key points for bell pepper management

1. During daily management of lantern peppers, water them appropriately. Start watering and applying fertilizer when the first fruit appears. The soil should be kept moist during the flowering and fruiting period. Water them every 5-10 days depending on the dryness and wetness of the soil. When the seedlings are finished and the first bunch of fruits grow to the size of a walnut, apply top dressing with nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer.

2. Lantern peppers have a strong branching ability. They need to be pruned before flowering, and the side branches that grow out need to be removed in time. During the management period, thinning of flowers and fruits should be done to ensure that no more than 6 fruits are produced on each plant at the same time. This is conducive to fruit enlargement.
