Gardenia cutting time and method

Gardenia cutting time and method

Gardenia cutting time

Gardenia can be propagated by cuttings around June, August, and October, but the temperature and humidity vary greatly during these months, making it difficult for novices to control and the chance of success low. The most suitable time for cuttings is mid-April, which is late spring and early summer. The temperature is suitable in most places, and gardenia can take root and sprout better.

Gardenia cutting method

1. Prepare the soil

Gardenia likes loose and fertile soil. You can use leaf mold and river sand mixed evenly as the culture soil, or you can use peat soil, pine needle soil, perlite and vermiculite in a ratio of 5:1:2:2. This soil is rich in ferrous sulfate and is very suitable for the growth of gardenia.

2. Prepare cuttings

Select new branches and buds with good growth and no diseases from a healthy gardenia mother plant and cut them as cuttings. Leave a few leaves on the top, remove all the extra leaves, cut the bottom into an oblique end, and soak them in rooting agent for 10 minutes.

3. Cuttings and potting

Put the culture soil into the flowerpot, the soil should be 2-3 cm lower than the edge of the pot, so that it will not overflow when watering later. Smooth the soil, use chopsticks to poke a few holes in the soil, the holes should be about 3-4 cm deep, insert the cuttings into the holes, press the soil around the cuttings, and water them thoroughly.

Gardenia cutting maintenance

After gardenia cuttings, place the flowerpot in a cool and ventilated place for maintenance, and keep the temperature at around 15 degrees Celsius. Too high a temperature will cause the roots of the cuttings to rot and the cuttings to fail. The flower soil must have sufficient moisture and should be replenished with water in time when it becomes dry. After about a month of maintenance, the cuttings will be able to grow roots.
