How to propagate Kalanchoe

How to propagate Kalanchoe

1. Cutting propagation

1. Time: Cutting is the main method of propagation of Kalanchoe, which is usually carried out in spring from March to May, or in August to September at the intersection of summer and autumn. At other times, the survival rate will be affected due to the dormancy of the plants, but it is not a big problem in the greenhouse.

2. Select seedlings: Select healthy and vigorous plants, and cut off 5 cm long mature fleshy stems from them without removing the leaves.

3. Soil selection: The choice of substrate is also particularly important. Generally, a mixture of perlite, vermiculite and peat is used, which has good drainage and air permeability.

4. Planting: Plant the cuttings on the substrate, cover them with plastic film after watering, which can achieve good heat preservation effect.

5. Transplantation: It will take root two to three weeks after planting. The substrate should be kept moist. It can be placed in semi-shaded place to receive scattered sunlight. It can be transplanted into a pot after one month.

2. Seed propagation

1. Time: The sowing method is generally carried out in spring or autumn. The most suitable time is March, as the temperature gradually rises, which is good for the development of seeds.

2. Seed selection: Only single-petal flowers of Kalanchoe have seeds, and there are a lot of seeds. Generally, multiple seeds can be sown at the same time, which can increase the survival rate.

3. Soil selection: Sowing has higher requirements for the substrate. Mix leaf mold, garden soil and humus soil, and disinfect it after it is decomposed as the substrate.

4. Sowing: Sprinkle the seeds evenly on the substrate and cover the surface with fine soil. It is not advisable to cover the soil too thickly.

5. Maintenance: Cover the surface with a film and store it in a warm and ventilated place. The potting soil needs to be kept moist and the temperature should be controlled at around 20℃.

6. Transplantation: Buds will appear in about two weeks, and at this time they can be exposed to diffuse light. At the same time, after the leaves appear, add a little fertilizer and water them. They can be transplanted in summer.
