Are cherries suitable for planting in the south?

1. Is it suitable for planting?

Cherries are widely distributed in the north and are also cultivated in the south. Because it needs a long period of low temperature environment during its growth process. Help it enter a dormant period to accumulate nutrients and prepare for flowering and fruiting. The high temperature in the south during winter can easily shorten its dormancy period. This leads to a lack of nutrients during the plant's growth period, resulting in small flowers and few fruits. However, there are also some varieties that require low cold conditions and are suitable for planting in the south.

2. How to keep it well

1. Variety selection: Most cherry varieties require a long period of cold environment to store nutrients for dormancy. But there are also some varieties that require less cold air, such as black-skinned cherries, yellow lantern cherries, red concubine cherries, etc. Although these fruits are not large, they taste very sweet and can adapt to the climate in the south.

2. Build a shed to avoid rain: Cherries usually ripen in May and June, which is often the rainy season in the south. Being exposed to rain not only reduces yields, but also easily causes diseases. Moreover, cherries are very afraid of waterlogging and need a shed to avoid rain.

3. Improve soil quality: Cherries grow well in loose and fertile soil, but the soil in the south is sticky and easily hardens and compacts. You can choose sandy loam for cultivation, and loosen the soil regularly without damaging the roots.

4. Supplement fertilizer: Since cherries in the south have a short dormancy period and store less nutrients, you can apply more fertilizer to provide nutrients for flowering and fruiting. Apply more nitrogen fertilizer during the early flowering period to promote flowering and sprouting. During the flowering period, spray urea and potassium dihydrogen phosphate on the leaves to increase the fruit setting rate. After the fruits are picked, use quick-acting compound fertilizer to supplement nutrients and prepare for flower bud differentiation in the second year.
