What kind of plant is Ginkgo? What kind of plant is Ginkgo

1. Plant introduction

Ginkgo is a deciduous tree belonging to the phylum Gyngospermae, class Ginkgoales, family Ginkgo, and genus Ginkgo. It is also known as the ginkgo tree or the maidenhair tree. It only exists in my country and is very precious. It is known as a living fossil. This plant is an endangered species, so if you encounter it in the wild, you must not destroy it. In addition, it has many varieties, including Dongting Emperor, Small Buddha's Hand, Duck Tail Ginkgo, Buddha Finger and so on.

2. Morphological characteristics

Ginkgo is a tree that can reach a height of about 40 meters. Its bark is gray-brown and has a relatively rough surface. Its crown is conical, with branches arranged in whorls, new branches are light brown-yellow, and old branches are gray. The leaves are fan-shaped, with very long petioles, light green in color, hairless on the surface, and turn yellow in autumn. Its cones are dioecious, with the female cones containing seeds, which usually mature in September and October.

3. Growth habits

Ginkgo is a relatively light-loving plant and has a strong adaptability to climate and soil. It can grow regardless of whether it is hot and rainy or with little rainfall, or in areas with severe winters, but its growth rate is relatively slow. It generally grows in warm and humid places below 1,000 meters above sea level. Deep, loose, fertile and well-drained soil is helpful to its growth.

4. Distribution

Ginkgo trees are a specialty of our country, and wild trees can only be found in Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang. It is usually mixed with coniferous and broad-leaved tree species such as Cryptomeria japonica and Torreya grandis. Due to its strong adaptability, it is cultivated in many places in my country. It can be seen from the northeast in the north to Guangzhou in the south. It is usually grown for seed production or as a garden tree.
