Cultivation methods and precautions of rice bamboo

Rice bamboo, also known as Phoenix Tail Bamboo, is a very beautiful ornamental plant, which is loved by people for its slender leaves and graceful posture. So if you want to grow a pot of rice bamboo at home, what methods and matters should you pay attention to? Let’s learn more about it below.

All">

1. Pot soil selection

First of all, you need to choose a good flowerpot for the rice bamboo. Generally, you can use a ceramic pot or a purple clay pot with good air permeability. In terms of soil, rice bamboo prefers acidic, slightly acidic or neutral soil, with a pH range of 4.5 to 7.0, and avoids heavy clay or alkaline soil. When caring for it at home, you can generally mix leaf mold, garden soil and river sand in equal proportions.

2. Light and temperature management

Bamboo likes full sun but can also tolerate shade. In an environment with sufficient light, the leaves of the rice bamboo will be more upright and the color will be brighter green. In addition, rice bamboo likes a warm environment, and the suitable growth temperature is 15℃-25℃. Just pay attention to keeping warm in winter.

3. Watering tips

The bamboo has a high demand for water, but it should not be overwatered to avoid root rot. Generally speaking, spring and autumn are the peak growth periods for rice bamboo, and the soil should be kept moist at this time. When the temperature is high in summer, the watering frequency should be increased and water should be sprayed appropriately to increase the air humidity. In winter, you should reduce watering and keep the soil slightly moist.

4. Reasonable fertilization

Rice bamboo does not require much fertilizer . However, during the peak growth period, decomposed liquid fertilizer should be applied once every half a month to promote plant growth. In winter, fertilization should be reduced or stopped to avoid fertilizer accumulation and damage to the root system.

5. Pest and disease control

Diseases include rust and leaf blight: for rust, you can use 80% mancozeb wettable powder 500-600 times diluted for spraying; for leaf blight, you can use 70% thiophanate methyl wettable powder 1000 times diluted for spraying.

Insect pests include aphids and wireworms: aphids can be sprayed with 1500 times diluted 80% DDT emulsion or 1000 times diluted malathion. Wireworms can be killed by watering the roots with 1000 times diluted 5% carbofuran in early spring to kill adults or larvae.

6. Notes

When growing rice bamboo, it is best to change the pot every two years. After it grows to a certain age, it will no longer need to be repotted, but the soil should also be replaced when repotting. In addition, the growth rate of rice bamboo is relatively fast and needs to be pruned frequently. Overly dense branches can be thinned out and those with weaker growth can be removed together to keep the rice bamboo ventilated and light-permeable.

Generally speaking, rice bamboo refers to the Phoenix tail bamboo, which has a grand and beautiful shape and is very suitable for home potted plants . And although it has certain requirements for the planting environment, it is still easy to cultivate as long as its growth habits are mastered.
