There are many farmers in the north and south of China who grow spinach. Below we will learn about spinach planting methods and the time to sow them.

When should spinach be planted?

1. Spring sowing

The spring sowing time is generally around March. When the temperature rises above 5℃, it is the best sowing period.

2. Summer sowing

The summer sowing time is generally between May and July. Summer spinach is heat-resistant and grows fast.

3. Autumn sowing

The autumn sowing time is generally between August and September, and autumn spinach is more heat-resistant.

4. Winter sowing

The winter sowing time is generally from mid-October to early November. Winter spinach is cold-resistant and suitable for growing in slightly colder climates.

How to grow spinach

1. Soil preparation

Choose a site with fertile soil and good drainage. Coarse sand or coal ash can be added to the soil to improve aeration, which is beneficial to the growth of spinach roots.

2. Seed selection

Make sure the seeds are fresh and within their shelf life, and choose seed varieties that are heat- or cold-tolerant depending on your local climate.

3. Seed treatment

For sowing in summer and autumn, the seeds need to be soaked in water for more than 12 hours, then placed in an environment of 4°C for 24 hours, and then germinated in an environment of 20-25°C. Sowing can be done after the seeds turn white. It can be sown directly in spring and winter.

4. Planting seeds

Use the sowing method, cover with a layer of wood ash after sowing, and water thoroughly.

5. Field management

After sowing, be sure to keep the soil moist and provide adequate shade to protect the seeds. Thin out the seedlings after true leaves grow and weed when appropriate.

6. Fertilization

During the growth period of spinach, apply a thinner amount of fertilizer in the early stage and gradually increase the amount of fertilizer as it grows. You can use farmyard manure or urea.

Generally speaking, spinach is a leafy vegetable with a short growth cycle. As long as the temperature and environment are suitable, it can be sown quickly.
