What to do if Gardenia leaves turn yellow and fall off (Causes and solutions)

What to do if Gardenia leaves turn yellow and fall off (Causes and solutions)

1. Improve ventilation

Reason: Poor air circulation can easily breed various bacteria, leading to unhealthy growth of the plant, and causing yellowing and falling leaves.

Solution: Place the gardenia in a well-ventilated area. You can open the windows every once in a while to ventilate the room, but as long as the space is large enough and the door is not closed for long periods of time, there will be no problem.

2. Timely iron supplementation

Reason: Gardenia cannot grow without iron. If the environment lacks iron, it will easily cause the leaves to turn yellow and fall off.

Solution: There are often two possibilities for iron deficiency. The first is that the soil is severely alkaline, which hinders its absorption of iron; the second is that the iron content in the environment is low. Therefore, on the one hand, we need to improve the soil quality and irrigate with acidified water. On the other hand, we can spray ferrous sulfate on the leaves for supplementation.

3. Appropriate fertilization

Cause: Insufficient nutrients causes gardenia to grow poorly, resulting in yellowing and falling leaves.

Solution: It is usually caused by a lack of nitrogen, but do not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer when applying fertilizer. Excessive nitrogen can easily cause the plant to grow too tall and hinder flowering. Apply a little compound fertilizer to provide more comprehensive nutrition.

4. Drainage and root pruning

Cause: There is water accumulation in the potting soil, causing the roots to be soaked and rotten, which in turn causes the leaves to turn yellow and fall off.

Solution: Carefully remove the gardenia bush from its pot, remove some of the old soil, and cut off any rotten roots. Choose a new pot and dry soil for replanting. Do not water immediately after planting. Wait until the plant slowly recovers before starting to water it. Do not water too much at ordinary times to avoid water accumulation again.
