Causes and treatments for yellowing leaves of hosta

Causes and treatments for yellowing leaves of hosta

1. Unsuitable soil

Reason: Hosta cultivation requires well-drained soil. Poor drainage of the planting medium will cause water accumulation and cause root rot and yellowing of leaves.

Solution: The potting soil needs to be replaced in time. For potted plants, you can replace the soil with loose and fertile. For open-field planting, it is best to choose sandy loam with deep soil and good drainage, or add culture soil.

2. Overwatering

Reason: Hosta prefers a humid environment, and the soil must be kept moist at all times during its growing period. However, during the cultivation process, if the plant is overwatered and drainage is poor, the roots may suffer from lack of oxygen and rot, causing the leaves to turn yellow.

Treatment method: The potted plants need to be moved immediately to a well-ventilated place for maintenance, and the soil should be loosened to allow the soil to breathe. Do not overwater the hosta, and drain the water promptly after rain during the rainy season.

3. Too little watering

Reason: Hosta likes water and cannot tolerate drought. The amount of watering needs to be properly controlled during the growing period. Long-term insufficient watering will cause the branches and leaves to wither and turn yellow. If the growing environment is too dry, it will also easily cause yellowing of the leaves.

Solution: At this time, you need to replenish water in time. Keep the soil in the pot moist during the growing period, and spray water on the leaves to maintain humidity when the air is dry.

4. Excessive light

Reason: Hosta is a shade-loving plant and cannot tolerate direct sunlight. Especially in summer, direct exposure to strong sunlight will cause the leaves to turn yellow and even cause scorched spots to appear on the leaf edges.

Solution: The plant needs to be shaded or moved to a cool place for maintenance. When growing hostas, you must choose a place that is shaded and not exposed to direct sunlight. If it is grown in a potted plant, it needs to be placed in a place with a shade degree of more than 80% in summer.

5. Excessive fertilization

Reason: Hostas don’t require much fertilizer. If too much fertilizer is applied during the growth process, especially concentrated fertilizer or raw fertilizer, it can easily cause the leaves to turn yellow and fall off.

Solution: You need to increase the amount of watering immediately to dilute the concentration of fertilizer in the soil, or immediately turn the pot over, replace the flower soil and replant. When liquid fertilizer is stained on the branches and leaves, it is necessary to rinse with water immediately. During the flowering period, it requires a lot of fertilizer and water, and it can be fertilized once every 7 days or so.
