How to plant onion

How to plant onion

Sheep horn onion is a variety of onion , also known as louzi onion, yellow onion, and dragon claw onion. It has an extremely strong onion flavor and is a very popular onion variety. Here is an introduction to the planting method of shallot.

1. Growth habits

Onion likes cool climates and is very cold-resistant. It can safely overwinter in the open field in environments below zero degrees. It is also drought-resistant and saline-alkali-tolerant, so it is widely planted in the northwest region. The suitable growth temperature is 13-25℃, and it is not resistant to high temperatures.

2. Breeding method

Onion can be sown or propagated by division. Sheep horn onion is usually sown in May and June, and division propagation is usually carried out in autumn, starting in August or September.

3. Land preparation and fertilization

Since the growth period of shallot is long, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. Generally, more than 5000kg of high-quality organic fertilizer is applied per mu, and 25kg of diammonium phosphate is applied.

4. Division propagation

Dig up the old onions. Generally, there are 4-6 ramets per clump. Dig trenches and plant them in rows. Keep the row spacing at 40-50cm and the plant spacing at about 20cm.

5. Adequate lighting

The environment for growing shallots needs plenty of sunlight, at least 6-8 hours of sunlight a day. The soil should have good drainage.

6. Watering management

In the early stage of the growth of shallot, it is necessary to water it 1-2 times a week, but the specific frequency depends on the soil and local climate conditions. The soil is required to be kept moist but not waterlogged.

7. Weeding

During the growth period of the onion, the surrounding weeds should be removed in time to ensure that the onion has sufficient nutrients and fiber. Too many weeds will affect its growth and development.

8. Harvest

When the onion leaves begin to turn yellow and fall over, it means it is ripe for harvest. Generally speaking, it takes about 2-3 months from planting to harvesting shallots, and the third month is the time period with more concentrated harvesting.
