Cutting method of Christmas cactus

Cutting method of Christmas cactus

1. Cutting time

Christmas cactus is suitable for cuttings in spring and autumn. The right time for cuttings can provide Christmas cactus with a suitable climate, which can promote the survival of the cuttings and rooting as soon as possible. In spring, it can be selected from March to June, preferably after the flowering period, and in autumn, it can be selected from September to October.

2. Select cuttings

Choose a healthy, vigorously growing Christmas cactus as the mother plant, prepare a sharp knife, and cut 3-7 plump, full, and healthy leaf-like stems as cuttings. The cut leaf-like stems cannot be directly used for cuttings. The wound is fresher and more moist, and they may rot if they are cut into the soil. Place the leaf-like stem in a cool and ventilated place and dry it in the sun for 2-3 days. Apply carbendazim on the wound and wait for the wound to heal and shrink.

3. Cutting medium

The substrate used for cuttings must be loose and breathable. It can be mixed with peat soil, sand, vermiculite and perlite. Sterilization and disinfection should be done in advance to remove pathogens and pests in the substrate.

4. Take cuttings

Prepare a flower pot of suitable size, fill it with the prepared substrate, and dig a hole in the substrate, about 2-3 cm deep. Cut the leaf-like stems into the substrate, water them appropriately to maintain humidity, maintain a good surrounding temperature, and cover them with bags for heating if necessary. Generally speaking, Christmas cactus will take root after about two months.
