What should I do if yam is infested with insects? What are the yam pests?

1. What to do if there are worms

It is inevitable that yam will be infested with insects during cultivation. If you want to prevent pests, you need to do a deep plowing before winter to turn the insect eggs out of the soil surface, so that they can be frozen to death in winter and will not cause pests in spring. At the same time, you can also apply enough organic fertilizer. Adequate fertilizer can improve the plant's resistance to insects. If insect infestation has already occurred, you need to place some poison baits around to attract the pests to eat them and then kill them. You can also use methyl isothioate solution to root out the insects.

2. What are the pests?

1. Grubs: Grubs are the larvae of beetles. They harm a variety of plants and vegetables, usually feeding on seeds, roots, tubers and seedlings. It occurs mostly in spring and autumn, and will drill holes in the yam, which not only affects the yield but may also induce diseases, leading to the death of the plant. You can use black light to lure and kill adult insects, or you can use phoxim to kill larvae.

2. Mole cricket: This pest is widely distributed in my country. It mainly harms crops in spring and autumn, and is particularly rampant in May. August to September is the second period of damage. They can usually be killed manually, usually by digging up the soil and destroying them before they wake up in spring. You can also use horse manure to lure and kill the fish. If you put poison bait on it, the effect will be better.

3. Aphids: Aphids are also one of the common pests. They mainly suck the juice from the yam stems, causing poor plant growth and thus affecting yield. Usually, drugs are used for prevention and control, such as marathon emulsion or cypermethrin emulsion. Dilute them into 1000 times liquid and spray them on the pests to kill them. You can also spray pepper water or laundry detergent water.

4. Thrips: Thrips, like aphids, also suck the juice from tender stems or leaves, which will cause the tender shoots of yam to curl and wither, reduce the effectiveness of photosynthesis, and thus affect the accumulation of nutrients. Generally, pesticides such as imidacloprid and acetamiprid are used for control. Since it is active at night and is dormant during the day, it is usually sprayed in the afternoon and the effective period should be long.
