What to do if hyacinth bulbs are moldy

Growth conditions of Coccidium species:

If the bulbs are moldy, it must be the mold that is causing the problem, but the culprit must be you. It is you who provided a good growth environment for the mold and allowed the mold to grow and harm the hyacinth bulbs.

Hyacinths grown hydroponically have high humidity, their bulbs are rich in nutrients, and the growing environment is very warm, all of which meet the needs for mold growth. If you meet a few unreliable flower lovers, the bulb mold rate will basically be 100% .

How to deal with moldy bulbs

The conventional method is to deal with the moldy parts, rinse with clean water and apply sterilization powder. After treatment, dry in a cool place and keep the cut surface dry to avoid recurrence. After drying, replant.

This is not a radical solution. No one can guarantee that the mold can be cleaned up completely, not to mention that there is mold in the air. Once the environment is suitable, the bulbs will easily become moldy and rot again. So the key is prevention!

Methods to prevent mildew

Maintain the integrity of the bulb itself. Do not turn the bulbs frequently to avoid damaging the root system. Be extra careful when changing water so as not to break the surface of the bulbs, leaving wounds and increasing the chance of infection.

Clean the root disk regularly. The roots at the bottom of hydroponic hyacinths are very easy to rot, and cleaning up the dead roots in time is also one of the prevention measures.

Make sure the sphere is dry. For hydroponic hyacinths, try to leave a distance of 1 to 3 centimeters between the bottom of the root tray and the water surface; for soil-grown hyacinths, do not wet the bulbs when watering.

Disinfect with carbendazim regularly. Carbendazim can prevent the growth of mold, but the ball will be damp after soaking and should be dried before replanting.

The growing environment should not be too warm, and it is better to keep it at a low temperature than too high one. Hyacinth itself can adapt to colder environments, and the flowering period is generally 15~18 ℃. Moderate temperature is also an important part of prevention.
