How to grow carrots on the balcony

How to grow carrots on the balcony

Carrot seedlings

1. First, water the potting soil thoroughly, spread the seeds evenly on the soil surface, and cover the soil to a depth of about 2 cm. Pay attention to watering to keep the soil moist. It will germinate in about 10 days in an environment of 18-25 degrees.

2. Carrots grow very slowly during the seedling stage, so the amount of water applied should be controlled to prevent the seedlings from growing too tall. Spray 1-2 times of decomposed organic fertilizer while watering.

3. Thin out the seedlings when they have 1-2 true leaves, with a plant spacing of 2-3 cm.

4. When the seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, thin them out again, with a suitable spacing of 5 cm between plants; when they have 5-6 true leaves, thin them out again, with a suitable spacing of 15 cm between plants. Alternatively, you can transplant the seedlings when they have 2-3 true leaves, with a plant spacing of 15 cm.

Daily management of carrots

1. Carrots are relatively drought-resistant, especially during the period of vigorous leaf growth, so you need to control the amount of water and add soil when necessary. When the fleshy roots of carrots begin to swell, increase the amount of watering, but not too much, so that there is no water accumulation in the soil.

2. When the carrots grow 7-8 true leaves, fertilize them regularly, water them, and spray them every 20 days or so; when the fleshy roots begin to swell, increase the amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers applied.

Harvesting carrots

Carrots can be harvested after about 3 months of planting, when the fleshy roots have fully expanded. This is when cracks appear in the soil near the fleshy roots, the heart leaves turn yellow-green, and the outer leaves begin to turn yellow. Carrots should be watered before harvesting and pulled out when the soil becomes soft.
