How to propagate Dieffenbachia and what to pay attention to

Dieffenbachia reproduction method

The main ways of propagating Dieffenbachia are division and cutting. Cutting propagation is the most commonly used and has a faster propagation speed. Seeding propagation can sometimes be used, and tissue culture is often used for large-scale propagation.

Dieffenbachia reproduction time

Variegated Dieffenbachia can be propagated by division, which is usually done in spring and combined with repotting. The survival rate is highest at this time.

Dieffenbachia propagation method

Dieffenbachia division propagation

The variegated dieffenbachia can be divided when repotting in spring. Take the plant out of the pot, cut off the rhizome of the stem, apply wood ash on the cut, and place it in a cool and ventilated place. After the wound heals, it can be planted in loose soil. Water it thoroughly after planting, but do not water it too much afterwards. It will resume growth in about 10 days.

Cutting propagation of Dieffenbachia

The best time for cuttings of variegated Dieffenbachia is July to August. Cut 7 to 10 cm branches from the top of the stem, trim the leaves at the lower part, apply wood ash or sulfur powder on the cut, and insert them into a sand bed in a semi-shaded place with high air humidity and about 50 to 60% sunlight intensity. Control the room temperature at 24 to 30°C. It will take about 15 to 25 days for roots to take root after insertion.

Seeding propagation of Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia is rarely propagated by seeding, mainly because it is complicated to maintain and takes a long time. Only breeding bases that carry out large-scale growth will use the seeding method.

Matters Needing Attention in the Propagation of Dieffenbachia

Before planting variegated dieffenbachia, you need to choose suitable soil so that the rooting speed will be faster. It is best to provide fertile, loose, well-drained soil. The maintenance temperature during the day should be around 30 degrees and around 25 degrees at night. The potting soil should be kept moist. It is best to maintain it under bright diffuse light. Fertilize during the growth period from June to September of the following year.
