Sugarcane planting technology

Sugarcane planting technology

1. Select cutting

Prepare a piece of unpeeled sugarcane, the thicker the better, use a knife to cut the sugarcane into several small pieces, making sure both ends of the cut are flush and each piece has 1-3 nodes, then place the cut sugarcane pieces in a cool and ventilated place to allow the wounds to dry thoroughly.

2. Planting Sugarcane

Prepare the soil and place the dried sugarcane segments flat on the soil. If the cut sugarcane has multiple nodes, place the buds on each node toward the left and right. If the cut sugarcane has only one node, place the buds upwards and gently cover the sugarcane segments with soil.

3. Post-planting maintenance

After planting the sugarcane segments, water them thoroughly and place them in a well-ventilated place with scattered light to keep the soil moist. If the maintenance temperature is low and the air humidity is poor, you can cover the sugarcane with a plastic bag to keep it warm and moisturized. Open the bag for ventilation at noon every day until the sugarcane sprouts.

4. Thinning out the seedlings

After the sugarcane sprouts, remove the bag and expose it to more sunlight for at least 5 hours a day to prevent the sugarcane from growing too tall. When the seedlings grow to 20 cm in height, make sure there are 1-2 healthy seedlings in each section of sugarcane, and break off the rest that are weak.

5. Water and fertilizer management

When planting sugarcane in pots, do not water it too frequently, otherwise the sugarcane will easily turn yellow and have rotten roots. It is best to wait until the surface of the potting soil turns white and dry before watering. Start fertilizing when the sugarcane grows to 30 cm in height. You can use farmyard manure, or you can use a combination of compound fertilizer and phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.

6. Precautions

If you use flowerpots to plant sugarcane, make sure the pots are large enough. Bury chicken manure at the bottom of the pots as base fertilizer when planting. After the sugarcane sprouts, expose it to more sunlight. You can then add soil and apply top dressing as the sugarcane grows.
