How to hydroponically cultivate Aspidistra

How to hydroponically cultivate Aspidistra

1. Select the tools

Choose a suitable container according to the shape of the Aspidistra. The bottle, pot, tank, or hydroponic container should look like it complements the plant. In short, whether you buy it or make it yourself, it should look decent and elegant. Don’t take a utensil and use it carelessly, so as not to affect your image and overall beauty.

2. Remove soil and wash roots

Everyone knows that soil is organic matter, which becomes inorganic matter after being converted to hydroponics. Therefore, before hydroponics, all organic matter attached to the roots must be cleaned to avoid affecting the growth after hydroponics and infection by pests and diseases.

The specific method of root washing is: dig the plant out of the pot, lift the branch with your right hand, lightly support the root system with your left hand, gently pat the roots with your right hand and shake them to completely separate the soil from the root system. Then soak the roots in clean water for 15 to 20 minutes, gently wash the roots with your hands, and change the water 2 to 3 times until the roots are completely clean. It is imperative to ensure that no soil is left. This is a key step in hydroponically growing Asparagus cochinchinensis and must not be neglected.

3. Root Pruning

After washing the soil, you can prune the plant appropriately according to its growth condition. Cut off the old roots, diseased roots and yellow leaves. Because the roots of the hydroponic Aspidistra are also the focus of appreciation, the beauty of the shape should be considered when arranging the root system. After pruning, wash it again and rinse off the root hair residue left by pruning to avoid bringing it into the water and causing pollution.

4. Root Disinfection

After cleaning the roots, you also need to disinfect them. Prepare 0.1% potassium permanganate aqueous solution, soak the Aspidistra for 10 to 15 minutes, take it out and freshen it with clean water. Note that the root disinfection time should not be too long or too short, and the potassium permanganate solution should not be too concentrated or too dilute.

5. Carry out hydroponics

If it is a glass vase, because the glass is thick and has a certain weight, you can straighten the roots of the Aspidistra and carefully place it into the vase, ensuring that the plant is upright. You can put some stones at the mouth of the vase to secure it. Then add 2/3 of water into the bottle to expand the roots.

If it is a plastic vase, because it is light, putting the Aspidistra in it may cause it to be top-heavy. Therefore, when growing water plants in water, add stones of a certain weight to the bottom of the vase, and then plant the Aspidistra in the vase as before.

If it is a pot, tank or other cultivation container, or other flower pots without bottom holes, you should consider the issue of fixing the roots in the water when using it.
