Can Pilea be grown hydroponically?

The common way to cultivate Pile flowers is soil cultivation. Hydroponic Pile flowers are relatively rare. Many people don’t know that this kind of flower can be completely hydroponically cultivated. Pile flowers cultivated using the hydroponics method have bright colors and clearer silvery-white stripes. They appear even more charming against the clear water and exquisite containers.

Hydroponic method of cool water flowers

Pile plant is generally propagated by cuttings, which can be done in spring or autumn. Just cut a branch with a terminal bud and place it directly in water for cultivation. New roots will grow in about ten days, and the survival rate is very high.

You can also directly use the potted plants to wash the roots and then carry out hydroponics. Choose a healthy plant of Pilea coleus, dig it out of the soil, gently shake off excess soil on the roots, and then rinse the roots clean with water that is close to the soil temperature. Then use scissors to cut off all the messy roots, diseased roots and rotten roots, leaving only some healthy and thick roots. Soak the trimmed roots in a diluted potassium permanganate solution for more than ten minutes, and then transplant them into a hydroponic container.

For newly transplanted Pilea coleus, be sure to change the water every day and promptly trim off some roots that are growing poorly or showing signs of rot, until the plant starts to grow new roots about a week later, at which time you can start to reduce the frequency of water changes.

Management of Pilea

Pilea prefers a moist, semi-shady environment, and the most suitable temperature for its growth is about 18-22℃. During the growing period of the Pilea coleus, water should be sprayed frequently to ensure the moisture of the leaves.

Be careful to avoid direct sunlight. It is best to place it in a place with bright scattered light. Proper shading and maintenance should be carried out in summer, but it should not be placed in a completely dark place, as this will make the leaves of the coleus dull and the branches and stems grow too long.

After the seedlings survive, the bud core should be removed in time, which can make the overall shape of the plant fuller. Pay attention to regular pruning to reduce the plant's softness and lodging, promote branching, and make the appearance more luxuriant and beautiful, but do not prune excessively, otherwise the leaves of the coleus will become numerous and small, reducing its ornamental value.
