How to propagate Verbena and when to take cuttings

How to propagate Verbena and when to take cuttings

1. Seed propagation

1. Sowing time: The sowing time for petunias is generally in spring and autumn. The climate at this time is relatively warm, which is very conducive to the rooting of seeds and also helps the growth of seedlings.

2. Germination treatment: In order to increase the germination rate of petunias, it is generally necessary to place them in a low temperature environment for a week of vernalization. After that, use a wet paper towel to avoid light to germinate until the seeds turn white.

3. Preparation of potting soil: Verbena does not have high requirements for soil, but if you want it to grow well, you need to plant it in loose, fertile, neutral soil. Garden soil combined with coarse sand is a good choice.

4. Planting: Sprinkle the petunia seeds on the soil surface, water them appropriately, and cover them with a layer of fine soil. If the temperature is kept between 15-17℃, the seedlings will emerge soon.

2. Cutting propagation

1. Cutting time: Verbena cuttings are usually carried out in May and June, and the temperature should be around 15℃. If the temperature is too high, it will easily cause rot, and if it is too low, it will affect the rooting of the cuttings.

2. Cuttings processing: Select healthy plants and cut a branch from them as cuttings. The length should be about 5-6 cm. It is better if there are buds on them, which can improve the survival rate.

3. Carry out cuttings: Insert the branches into a moist sand bed and provide shade. It usually takes two to three days before they can see the light, and they can only be exposed to the sun in the morning or evening.

4. Subsequent maintenance: Usually the cuttings will take root and sprout in about two weeks. When 5-6 true leaves grow, they need to be transplanted. They can be planted when they are 7 or 8 cm in length.
