Osmanthus cultivation and Feng Shui knowledge

Cultivation method of osmanthus

Osmanthus prefers a warm environment and grows best in deep, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, slightly acidic sandy soil.

It is not tolerant to drought and barrenness. It grows particularly slowly on shallow, compacted and poor soil. It has sparse branches and leaves, thin leaves, yellow leaves, no flowers or very few flowers, and even periodic dry top phenomenon. In severe cases, the whole plant dies. It likes sunlight, but has a certain shade tolerance.

The suitable temperature for osmanthus growth is 25-28℃. Temperatures above 30℃ are not conducive to growth and development, while temperatures below -6℃ are prone to frost damage. The room temperature for potted plants to safely overwinter is more suitable between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius.

In the north, move the osmanthus indoors in late autumn and keep the soil in the pot slightly moist to allow it to fully dormant to facilitate flowering next year. After Qingming Festival the following year, move it to a ventilated and sunny place for maintenance. Potted osmanthus should be repotted and the soil changed every 1 to 2 years, and sufficient base fertilizer should be applied.

Pruning is required in autumn after flowering. Branches that grow too densely should be thinned out appropriately so that evenly thick branches are left on each side branch. If the branches are too dense, photosynthesis will be affected, which will cause physiological disorders and affect bud formation and flowering. At the same time, the long branches that grow in summer and autumn should be cut off.

The second pruning is done in early spring before the buds sprout, and all dead branches, weak branches, and diseased and insect-infested branches that have survived the winter are cut off.

If the plant is too tall and has few branches at the bottom and an ugly shape, the top of the main trunk can be trimmed to allow adventitious buds to form at the bottom and new branches to sprout. In addition, the suckers should be pruned frequently during the growth period to concentrate nutrients, which is beneficial to the growth of spring shoots and the setting of flowers.

Feng Shui knowledge of osmanthus

Osmanthus is the Feng Shui flower for people whose five elements belong to water. Sweet osmanthus, which sounds like "gui" (gui) and "gui" (gui) in Chinese, is an auspicious Feng Shui plant. There is a romantic story behind osmanthus. The story of "Wu Gang cutting osmanthus" adds a mysterious and romantic color to osmanthus.

Osmanthus is a lucky flower for people born in the Year of the Rat. People whose five elements belong to water or who were born in the Year of the Rat can put osmanthus in their room. People whose zodiac sign is Monkey should place bonsai of plants and flowers belonging to the metal element, such as osmanthus, in the west or northwest of their room. This will also be beneficial to their fortune.

Osmanthus can emit a light but elegant fragrance, which is strong but does not irritate people's sense of smell. Many people choose it to visit the sick because it can purify the air in the ward.

The same applies at home. If you keep osmanthus flowers at home for a long time, they can absorb odors in the home for a long time and release clean oxygen and bursts of fragrance through photosynthesis.
