How to plant white radish and when to plant it?

As a common root vegetable , white radish is not only nutritious and crisp in taste, but also relatively easy to grow. However, in order to grow high-quality and high-yield white radish, it is crucial to master the correct planting time and key points. So what is the planting method and time for white radish? Let’s take a look below.

1. Planting time

The planting time of white radish varies according to region and season. Generally speaking, spring and autumn are the best times to grow white radish. In northern regions, spring sowing can be carried out from late March to early April, and autumn sowing can be carried out from mid-August to early September. Due to the warmer climate in the south, the sowing time can be appropriately advanced.

2. Soil Preparation

White radish does not have high requirements for soil, but loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam or loam is most suitable. Before sowing, deep plowing and fine raking should be carried out to remove weeds and stones, and an appropriate amount of decomposed organic fertilizer should be applied as base fertilizer.

3. Sowing and Management

White radish can be sown in rows or in holes. When sowing in rows, dig shallow furrows with a row spacing of 25-30 cm, sprinkle the seeds evenly, and cover with soil about 1 cm; for hole sowing, dig holes with a plant spacing of 20-25 cm, sow 3-4 seeds in each hole, and cover with soil. After sowing, keep the soil moist, but not too wet to avoid disease.

Thinning and transplanting: When the seedlings grow 2-3 true leaves, carry out the first thinning and remove weak, diseased and overcrowded seedlings. When the seedlings grow 5-6 true leaves, they are transplanted, leaving one healthy seedling in each hole.

Intertillage and weeding: During the growing period, intertillage and weeding should be carried out regularly to loosen the soil, increase air permeability, and reduce competition between weeds and white radish nutrients.

Water and fertilizer management: White radish requires a lot of water and nutrients during its growth period. Especially during the period of fleshy root expansion, the soil should be kept moist and compound fertilizer or urea should be applied once to promote the rapid growth of fleshy roots.

4. Pest and disease control

White radish is easily attacked by some common diseases and pests during its growth process. Therefore, reasonable prevention and control measures should be taken, such as crop rotation, field cleaning, and the use of yellow boards to lure and kill aphids. If necessary, low-toxic and high-efficiency pesticides can be used for prevention and control.

5. Harvest and Storage

The harvest time for white radish is generally when the fleshy roots are fully expanded and the leaves begin to turn yellow. After harvesting, remove the soil and fibrous roots in time, grade them by size, and store them in a cool, ventilated place.

White radish is a nutritious vegetable that can be used as both medicine and food. It has the effects of clearing away heat and promoting body fluid, digesting food and relieving stagnation, and stimulating appetite and strengthening the spleen. In recent years, as people pay more attention to health, white radish has become one of the vegetables that more and more people like.
