Legend 1

According to folklore, one summer in ancient times, an evil dragon wreaked havoc, causing storms and waves. Floods submerged farmland and villages, and many people and animals were drowned. The people were deeply trapped in the plight of the flood and hoped that God would bless them and save them from the flood. The kindness of the people moved Guanyin Bodhisattva, who came riding on a cloud and dropped a huge bell from the sky. She trapped the evil dragon inside the bell and threw it into a deep pool, preventing it from causing trouble forever. Afterwards, Guanyin Bodhisattva threw down a bamboo branch and used it to sweep away the flood. The bamboo branch took root in the soil and slowly formed a bamboo forest. Since then, bamboo forests have been playing the role of conserving water and soil, protecting embankments, and regulating the climate, thus protecting people from the harm of floods.

Legend II

A long time ago, it was said that whoever could get a feather of a phoenix would become as beautiful as the phoenix. A green bamboo knew this and thought: Although the pine tree, plum blossom and I are called the “Three Friends of Winter”, I also want to be as beautiful as the plum blossom! So he begged the eagle to help him get a feather from the phoenix. The eagle flew over nine high mountains, crossed nine large rivers, and saw the phoenix. The kind-hearted phoenix asked the eagle to bring a beautiful feather to Green Bamboo. Green Bamboo was so happy that he danced with the feather in his hand. Suddenly, a ray of light flashed by, and the green bamboo suddenly became taller, and its branches and leaves became thinner. The green stem is curved and drooping, just like a beautiful phoenix tail. From then on, people called this evergreen, graceful green bamboo "Phoenix Tail Bamboo".
