Difference Between Gardenia and Jasmine

Difference Between Gardenia and Jasmine

1. Flowers

First of all, in terms of flowering time, although their flowers begin to bloom from May and June, the former generally only blooms until August, while the latter can bloom until November. In terms of flower shape, the former is usually a single flower, while the latter usually has three or more flowers blooming together; the calyx of the former is usually split into 5 pieces, while the calyx of the latter is 8-9 pieces.

2. Mosaic and Leaves

If they have not yet bloomed, we can distinguish them from their flowers and leaves. Although the petals and leaves of both are oval, very dark green and shiny, they have one very obvious difference, which is their length. The floral leaves of the former are generally about 12 cm long, while those of the latter are generally 3-8 cm long. From this point of view, it is easy to distinguish them.

3. Flower buds

If they have flower buds in April or May, we can also distinguish them based on this. In comparison, the former's buds are more pointed, while the latter's are more round.

4. Fruit

The fruit of the former is oval, relatively large, 1.5-7cm long and 1.2-2cm in diameter, mostly yellow or orange-red, with straight ridges and a cavity inside containing many seeds, while the fruit of the latter is spherical, relatively small, about 1cm in diameter, and purple-black in color.

5. Branches

We can also distinguish them by parting its leaves and observing its main branches. The branches of the former are gray, while those of the latter are brown.
