How to grow potted peony flowers

Shade during flowering period

It is not advisable to not provide shade for peonies during their blooming period. During this period, if the peony is not properly shaded and exposed to the sun, the flowering period of the peony will be greatly shortened, and the blooming flowers will lose their luster, which will reduce the ornamental value of the peony.

Leave the room later

Peonies should not be taken out of the house too early in spring. In spring, although the temperature has slowly started to rise, it still sometimes experiences low temperatures. The normal flowering time of peony is from April to May, which depends on the maintenance temperature. If the peony is taken out of the house too early, once it encounters low temperatures, its flower buds will stop growing or even fall off, and in severe cases the plant may wither and die.

The soil cannot accumulate water

Peonies have fleshy roots and are afraid of waterlogging. When growing peonies, if you water them too much, their roots will easily rot, affecting their growth and flowering. When watering peonies, be sure to water them at the right time and in the right amount to ensure that the soil is slightly moist. Drainage should be strengthened during the rainy season.

Timely pruning

Reasonable pruning is a necessary process for peonies to bloom. Improper pruning will cause the peony flowers to be small, dull in color, and deformed. When pruning peonies, you should cut off the top buds and keep the side buds. After the flowers fade, the remaining flowers should be cut off to avoid nutrient consumption.

Preventing pests and diseases

When growing peonies, diseases and insect pests should be avoided, as this will lead to many adverse consequences and even the death of the plants. The more common diseases and pests of peonies include gray mold, sclerotinia, rust and white rot, as well as scale insects, caterpillars and underground pests, which need to be prevented and controlled in a timely manner.
