Catalpa cultivation methods and precautions

Catalpa cultivation methods and precautions

Planting of catalpa

The planting of elm trees can be carried out in spring and autumn. The planting holes should be dug before planting. Planting with soil balls can increase the survival rate, but care should also be taken not to plant too deep, as too deep will cause the plants to suffocate. Some well-rotted base fertilizer should be applied during planting and mixed with the planting soil. Water the plants once after planting, and then water them again three days later and five days later.

Water and fertilizer management of catalpa

In daily maintenance, attention should be paid to the water management of the catalpa tree. In addition to the first three waterings after planting, two thorough waterings should be chosen between May and October. When there is more precipitation in the summer, no watering is required unless it is too dry. Antifreeze water should also be applied in winter. After the plant is four years old, just water it with greening water and antifreeze water. In addition, the catalpa tree likes fertilizer. Apply enough base fertilizer when planting. You can apply some urea in May to make the plant lush and accelerate its growth.

Pruning of catalpa trees

Because the elm tree has a strong sprouting ability, it is resistant to pruning. When the new branches reach about 30 cm in spring, select suitable main branches and cut off the excess branches. The new buds should also be wiped off during the growing period. If you want to expand the crown, you need to shorten the main branches and retain the outer buds.

Precautions for cultivating catalpa trees

Catalpa trees are also susceptible to threats from diseases and pests. Common pests include the amber bug, the gypsy moth, the paulownia tortoise shell, the catalpa borer, etc., which can be controlled by spraying insecticides. Another common disease of catalpa trees is anthracnose, which is prone to occur under high temperatures and poor ventilation. Therefore, in addition to spraying pesticides, we must also pay attention to the water and fertilizer management of catalpa trees to improve the plant's disease resistance.
