How to propagate Tillandsia?

How to propagate Tillandsia?

Seed propagation

The seeds of Tillandsia are generally obtained by artificial pollination. When the seeds are obtained, they should be sown immediately. The soil for sowing can be a mixture of peat soil + perlite + river sand. The soil needs to be disinfected before sowing, and then the seeds are evenly sprinkled on the soil and covered with plastic film. No soil is needed. The best temperature for germination is between 24℃ and 26℃, and seedlings will emerge in one to two weeks. When the seedlings have 3 to 4 leaves, they can be transplanted into other pots for planting.

Propagation by division

The best time for division is from April to June. When you observe that the suckers have grown 3 to 5 leaves and are 10 cm in height, pull the entire plant out of the pot, clean off the soil, and then break off the suckers. After breaking them off, disinfect the wounds first and dry them naturally. Finally, insert them into suitable soil. At this time, ensure the humidity of the soil and air, and avoid direct sunlight. After 1 to 2 months, when new roots grow out, you can maintain them in normal ways.

Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is also a common propagation method used by flower lovers. When the tiller buds of the Tillandsia grow to 10 cm in height and have 3 to 5 leaves, they can be cut directly off. The wound should be disinfected and dried, and then inserted into coarse sand or perlite. As with division, the soil and air should have appropriate humidity, and direct sunlight should not be allowed. After 1 to 2 months, new roots will grow out, and then they can be maintained in normal ways. The selection of tiller buds is very important, and they should not be too large or too small.
