Suitable planting time for onions

The best time to sow onions is in March in spring, and in early October in southern regions. Do not sow too early, as low temperatures will cause a large number of leaves to die. If sown too late, the seedlings will be small, the root system will be poorly developed, and they will easily die.

Planting methods and key points of winter onion

1. Choose the seedbed

Before sowing onions, choose sandy loam that has not been used to grow onions or garlic, has good drainage, and has loose soil as the seedbed. Then deep plow the soil and apply decomposed poultry manure to increase the nutritional content of the seedbed.

2. Sowing and seedling raising

Mix the onion seeds with fine soil, then spread them evenly on the seedbed, cover with 1-2 cm of mud to bury the seeds, and finally cover the seedbed with a layer of plastic film to increase warmth and moisture.

3. Planting and maintenance

One to two days before transplanting, water the seedbed thoroughly. Pull out the onions on the day of transplanting, then arrange the onions in the transplanting ditch with a spacing of 3-5 cm, cover them with fine soil, and finally water them with clean water and manure.

Key points for managing shallots

1. Pre-winter management

For the management of shallot seedlings, remove the covering after emergence, add water to drier areas, or irrigate with a small amount of water once, and combine irrigation with the application of human manure or urea once.

2. Winter management

When the temperature drops to around 3 degrees, the green onions basically stop growing. At this time, they need to be watered once to enhance their cold resistance. A 50-cm-high shed can be built in time, and the top and sides can be covered with corn stalks and other straw to prevent strong winds, rain and snow from crushing the onion seedlings and low temperatures. A small shed can also be built to cover them to ensure intermittent growth when the temperature rises in winter.
