How to propagate Sansevieria by cuttings?

Tiger Piranha is favored by people for its tenacious vitality and unique leaf texture. This plant can survive growing in a corner for months even if it is neglected. However, the growth of snake plant will slow down in a shaded environment indoors, but it will grow rapidly under proper light and warm and humid conditions outdoors. Propagating Sansevieria is a relatively simple process. Let’s learn how to propagate Sansevieria by cuttings.

1. Hydroponic cuttings

Hydroponic cuttings are a simple method that does not require complicated tools . Prepare a shallow cup, add clean water, and use rooting powder or rooting solution to increase the rooting rate. Use a sterilized knife or scissors to cut sturdy snake plant leaves, each about 12 cm long, soak them in rooting powder and insert them into water, taking care to keep them in the correct direction.

Trim the bottom of the leaves into an inverted V shape to increase the contact area between the cut and water and promote rooting. Maintain the water level and change the water regularly, place the water cup in a ventilated and lighted environment, maintain a temperature of 20 to 25 degrees and appropriate humidity, wait patiently for one or two months, and observe the growth of the roots.

2. Soil culture cuttings

Soil-based cuttings require sharp tools, rooting powder and well-drained potting soil. Place the cut leaves in a ventilated and well-lit place to dry the wounds, and then after a few days, plant them in potting soil mixed with perlite and peat soil. Keep the environment warm and ventilated, and the potting soil slightly moist.

3. Division propagation

Division propagation is a quick and effective method and is usually carried out when repotting in spring. Separate the side shoots of the snake plant from the mother plant, dry the wounds and replant them. This method is simple and reproduces quickly.

4. Tuber propagation

The underground tubers of Sansevieria can continuously produce new shoots. When operating, cut the tubers with small sprouts, be careful not to damage the roots, and plant them in new soil after drying.

In summary, for novices, the success rate of propagating Sansevieria using leaf cuttings may not be high. Therefore, it is essential to maintain bright light, ventilated environment and proper air humidity. Make sure the tools are sterilized before use and use a well-drained medium for the potting soil to increase the success rate of propagation.
