Ginger planting methods and cultivation techniques

Ginger planting methods and cultivation techniques

Ginger is a widely cultivated plant. Its fleshy rhizome is not only edible but also rich in ginger oil, which exudes a unique spicy aroma and can effectively remove fishy smell. Therefore, it is often used as a condiment in daily cooking. Ginger can not only be eaten fresh, but also dried or pickled. Let’s learn about ginger planting methods and cultivation techniques .

1. Variety Diversity

In China, there are many varieties of ginger, and their names are usually based on the skin color of the rhizome, the color or shape of the buds, and the characteristics of the place of origin. The main ginger varieties in the southern region include red claw ginger and yellow claw ginger from Jiaxing and Hangzhou County, Zhejiang, phoenix ginger and Zaoyang ginger from Hubei, bamboo root ginger from Sichuan, white ginger from Tongling, Anhui, yellow ginger from Yuxi, Yunnan, sparse-rod large-fleshed ginger and dense-rod fine-fleshed ginger from Guangzhou, and round-fleshed ginger from Yulin, Guangxi.

2. Suitable cultivation time

Ginger has a long growth cycle and is usually sown in spring and harvested before the Descent of Frost. For example, in Hubei Province, most seeds are sown from late April to early May and harvested around October.

3. Land preparation and fertilization

Ginger is susceptible to rot, so it is recommended to rotate crops every 3 to 4 years and avoid continuous cropping. The land should be leveled and well drained to avoid drought and waterlogging. Ginger has a large demand for fertilizer , and sufficient organic fertilizer should be applied as base fertilizer, such as 7,000 to 7,500 kilograms of decomposed pig manure and urine per mu.

4. Sowing method

Choose healthy, large ginger seeds with 1 to 2 strong buds, weighing about 100 grams. Before sowing, soak the ginger seeds in wood ash extract for 10 to 20 minutes, then dry them in the sun to promote germination. When planting, the ginger seeds should be placed obliquely with the buds facing upwards and kept in the same direction, covered with wood ash or compost.

5. Fertilizer and water management

Ginger is tolerant to fertilizer, so in addition to sufficient base fertilizer, it also needs top dressing at the right time. When the seedling height reaches 13 to 16 cm, apply seedling-growing fertilizer, such as about 10 kg of ammonium sulfate. When the seedlings have 1 to 2 branches, apply seedling-strengthening fertilizer, such as 15 kg of compound fertilizer . When entering the vigorous growth period, apply heavy topdressing, applying 25 to 30 kilograms of compound fertilizer per mu. The seedling stage requires less water. Water in the morning and evening to cool down during the hot summer, and drain in time after heavy rain.

6. Cultivation and soil cultivation

Combine topdressing with timely tillage and weeding. Since ginger rhizomes have the habit of growing upward, in addition to planting deeper, it is also necessary to add soil 3 to 4 times, about 13 to 16 cm each time.

7. Shading measures

Ginger cannot tolerate strong light and should be properly shaded during its growth period. Starting from early to mid-June, build a 1-meter-high flat frame and cover it with straw or shade net to maintain appropriate light. Remove shade racks around the time of the Beginning of Autumn, or use tall crops for natural shade.

8. Harvest timing

In late June, when the seedlings have 4 to 5 leaves, the ginger can be harvested. Young ginger is harvested from July to August until September to October. Old ginger should be harvested in time before frost to avoid storage being affected by freezing.

I hope these ginger cultivation techniques will be helpful to growers. If you have any other questions about agriculture, rural areas and farmers knowledge or technology, please leave a message in the comment area.
