How to plant petunia

Balcony potted plants management in four seasons

autumn

Arrange on south, east and west facing balconies.
The ideal sowing period for petunias is generally in October-November in autumn when the temperature drops to around 20℃. The seedlings can be transplanted after they have 4-6 leaves. For hanging cultivation, flower pots with hooks should be used. Well-drained, loose soil can help petunias grow better.
After the petunia is transplanted and established, sufficient light and moist soil are essential. As winter approaches and the temperature continues to drop (above 0℃), it is time to take cold prevention measures. Except for petunias grown in hanging plants, no fertilizer is required in autumn.

winter

Arrange on south, east and west facing balconies.

The lowest temperature that can allow petunias to safely survive the winter is about 0℃. They also need sufficient light in winter, so they should be placed in an enclosed balcony with easy access to sunlight to avoid damage to petunias from winter rain, snow, and cold winds.

If the indoor temperature is maintained at a higher level, the flowering period of petunias can be appropriately advanced.

spring

Arrange on south, east and west facing balconies.

When the temperature rises in spring, many side branches will grow at the base of the petunia and flower buds will sprout and bloom.
Appropriate amounts of fertilizer should be applied during the bud stage, and sufficient light should be ensured in water and fertilizer management during the flowering period.
When fertilizing potted petunias, be careful not to overfertilize, especially nitrogen fertilizer. Too much nitrogen fertilizer can easily cause the vines to grow too long, resulting in the plant being too tall and falling over.

summer

Suitable for east and north facing balconies.
Although petunias like sunshine, they are not resistant to high temperatures. In summer, we should pay attention to proper cooling. For example, provide appropriate shade, sprinkle water around it regularly, and increase indoor ventilation to cool it down through water evaporation.
But to avoid excess water in the potting soil, just prevent the soil from being too dry. In hot weather, if the soil in the pot is too moist, it can easily cause the petunia to rot its roots, and in severe cases, lead to death.
The weather characteristics of continuous temperatures above 30℃ in summer will make it difficult for old petunias that bloom in spring and newly planted seedlings to withstand it, resulting in poor growth and physiological death. If your home is in an area with high temperatures in summer and there is a lack of effective cooling measures, it is recommended not to sow in May, June, or summer.

Balcony potted plants

The continuous flowering period of petunia is approximately the end of May and October. If the vines grow too long, you can shorten the stems, apply liquid fertilizer (5 times decomposed) 1-2 times, and keep the soil in the pot moist. This will encourage new branches and flowers to grow from the old stems.

For petunias grown in hanging positions, no pruning is required.
