How to propagate roses

How to propagate roses

Seeding method

It is usually used to cultivate new varieties. The seeds harvested in autumn are put into plastic bags filled with moist sandy soil and placed in an environment that freezes at night and thaws during the day. After about a month, the temperature is gradually increased to about 20°C. After the seeds crack and germinate, they can be sown (or stored in sand until sown in the spring of the following year). When the seedlings grow 3-5 leaflets, they are transplanted.

Cutting method

Softwood cuttings

That is, select newly sprouted branches in early spring, use a sharp knife to cut off a little wood from the stem, treat them with growth hormones, and then insert them into a cutting bed or small pot.

Semi-lignified branch cuttings

This method is to select rose branches with just faded flowers from June to September, cut off the pedicels, flatten the lower part, divide it into sections of 2-3 nodes, cut off the lower leaf, then cut off the unhealthy and tender leaves, treat them with growth stimulants, and then insert them into the bed with the same conditions as the above method.

Hardwood cuttings

Cut the one-year-old branches before wintering, divide them into sections with 2-3 nodes, and bundle 10 branches. Dig a 30cm hole in the low-temperature greenhouse and bury the cuttings upside down in moist sandy soil. Cover the top with 5-10cm of soil (keep it wet). In the early spring of the second year, insert the cuttings into the planting bed.

Hard branch water grafting method

Select semi-lignified branches or hard branches with 1-2 leaves, flatten the base with a sharp knife, insert them into a container of water, immerse 1/2 of the branches in water, and place them in a place with a temperature of 15℃-20℃ and sunlight to allow them to grow roots. During the root promotion period, the water in the container should be replaced every 2-3 days. When the epidermis of the new roots on the branches turns light yellow or light brown, they can be taken out and carefully planted in nutrient bags for cultivation.

Grafting

Bud grafting

Every 5-9 days, select full buds on the good quality mother plant and cut them off, and graft 1-2 buds on the Baiyutang or rose rootstock. You can also graft a bud every 8-10 cm on a long branch of the rootstock. After the grafting, cut the branches with a grafted bud into sections, and insert them into a sand bed or container as with the general cutting method.

Branch grafting

Every spring, you can use cut grafting, tongue grafting, and belly grafting to graft high-quality branches onto rose and white jade tree rootstocks.

Root connection

During the dormant period of roses in winter and spring, place the scion on a root of rose or white rose indoors. After tying it, plant it at the bottom of a medium-temperature greenhouse, keep it moist, and wait until the interface heals before potting it or transplanting it.

Layering

Ground layering

During the growing season of roses, make a cut under the buds on the rose branches, bend them and bury them in moist soil, with the tip of the branch sticking out of the soil. When new roots grow from the cut buried in the soil, they can be cut and transplanted.

Air layering

Choose a suitable location on the rose branch, make a scratch or ring peel the epidermis by 1-1.5 cm, wrap a soil ball with a diameter of 6-8 cm at the peeled area with a bamboo tube or plastic cloth, and keep it moist at all times. After about a month, new roots will grow from the wound. Cut them off and plant them in a seedbed or flowerpot.

Division method

Generally, roses can be planted deeper or the roots can be covered with soil to encourage the growth of new roots on each branch stem. In conjunction with repotting, the side branches that have grown new roots can be cut off to form a new plant.
