When and how to prune lavender, when to prune lavender

When and how to prune lavender, when to prune lavender

1. Pruning time

Lavender is generally pruned in spring, but it can also be pruned in autumn, but not heavily, otherwise it will affect the plant's wintering. It is usually done on a sunny day. If it is rainy, the pruning wounds will easily become infected, affecting its recovery.

2. Pruning method

1. Pinching: Pinching is the pruning performed on lavender seedlings. Generally, when it grows to 10 cm in height, its top buds are cut off. This can limit the height of the plant to prevent it from growing too tall. At the same time, as the plant loses its apical dominance, its side branches will begin to sprout, making it more lush.

2. Pruning: Two years after lavender is planted, the plant is basically formed and needs to be pruned appropriately every year thereafter. First, you need to cut off its thin branches so that nutrients can be concentrated on strong branches and improve its ability to bloom. In addition, if the plant is diseased or infested with insects, the diseased branches and leaves should be cut off in time.

3. Cutting flowers: Since lavender has a very unique aroma, if you want to better preserve the smell or use it to make essential oils, you need to cut its flowers during the flowering period. Generally, you should cut it at the first section below the flower. Don't cut it too short, otherwise it will be difficult to preserve. If you cut it too late, its flavor will be much weaker.

3. Notes

When pruning lavender, be sure to use sharp scissors to ensure the cut is clean and smooth. After pruning, spray carbendazim and place the plant in a ventilated place to dry to prevent the wound from being infected by bacteria, causing the plant to become sick and affecting its growth and development.
