Four-season maintenance methods of poinsettia

Four-season maintenance methods of poinsettia

Spring maintenance

Timely pruning and repotting

April to May in spring is the best time to prune and repot. When repotting, choose fertile, well-drained soil. The quality of the soil directly affects the growth of poinsettia. When changing the soil, replace 1/3 of the soil to avoid plants being unable to adapt to large-scale soil changes.

After repotting, ensure that the plant has sufficient water and light to promote the regrowth of its branches. The new semi-lignified branches can be cut off and used for cuttings. At the same time, the plant can be properly pruned so that the old branches are evenly distributed. If you don't prune the branches, you should pinch off the tips 2 to 3 times to ensure a full plant shape.

The soil in the pot is dry and wet

Spring is the peak growth season for poinsettia, so it is necessary to ensure sufficient sunlight and watering. Make sure the soil in the pot is dry and moist. If you water too much, the soil in the pot will remain moist for a long time, the roots will grow poorly and are prone to root rot. However, if the soil in the pot is dry for a long time, the roots will easily shrivele, causing the plant to lack water. Therefore, water when the soil is dry, and stop watering when the soil is wet.

Summer maintenance

Avoid high temperature exposure

Poinsettia cannot tolerate high temperatures or scorching sun. The summer temperature should not exceed 28°C, otherwise it will grow poorly. The plant should be grown in a semi-shaded environment to ensure adequate water supply. When the temperature is high, it should be sprayed frequently around the plant and ventilation should be increased to lower the temperature. If the temperature is higher than 28℃, the growth of poinsettia will stagnate and fertilization should be stopped. Fertilization should be resumed after the temperature drops.

Normal watering and fertilization

Although the summer is hot and humid, under normal circumstances, poinsettia can still grow normally. It is necessary to replenish water in time, water it once in the morning and evening, and avoid watering during the scorching sun. Apply decomposed liquid fertilizer once every 20 days, try to apply it in the evening and expose it to the sun the next morning.

Autumn maintenance

Increase lighting

As the temperature gradually turns cooler in autumn, it is necessary to gradually increase the light in the morning and evening to ensure adequate supply of water and fertilizer. If the plant shape has been formed, short-day treatment can be used to promote flowering.

Pay attention to temperature control

As the temperature drops in late autumn, you need to pay attention to temperature control and move the plants indoors in time for maintenance, keeping the indoor temperature at around 20°C.

Winter maintenance

Temperature control

Poinsettia is not cold-resistant, and the flowering temperature in early winter should be kept at 15℃ to ensure sufficient light and water and fertilizer supply. Insufficient temperature will affect flowering, and the leaves will turn yellow and fall off, causing the plants to fall off and affecting their appearance.

Flower viewing

In winter, all the previous efforts have paid off. When the flowers are blooming, lower the temperature appropriately. At a temperature of 5~10℃, the viewing period can reach 2 months. Watering should be reduced after flowering, and the soil in the pot should be relatively dry.
