4 common mistakes in caring for succulent plants

Plenty of sunlight

Meat fans all know that succulents are healthier and their flesh color will be more vivid if exposed to the sun. Therefore, no matter how strong the sun is at noon in summer or how cold it is outside in winter, they all take them outside to dry in the sun, for fear that the glass layer of the window will block the ultraviolet rays.

Succulents prefer an environment with plenty of sunlight, but different varieties of succulents have different requirements for light. Even for the same variety, the requirements for light will be different in different growth cycles and seasons.

As it is midsummer now, many succulents are in a dormant period, so the light cannot be too strong and appropriate shade should be provided.

In a word: there is plenty of sunshine, but you must know when to stop.

Dry environment

Due to the climatic environment of their origin, many succulent fans believe that succulents are very resistant to drought and high temperatures and do not require a humid environment. As a result, many plants lack water and shrink, and eventually die. They also complain that succulents are too drought-intolerant!

In fact, in its place of origin, there are one or two concentrated rainfalls every year to meet its water needs, and the root system can also extend freely to absorb water. Nowadays, many flower growers are cultivating and breeding succulents in greenhouses. After N generations of breeding, they have become fond of the modern environment. Especially after potting, the roots cannot stretch and the water absorption range is limited. If water is not supplied in time, it will be detrimental to growth.

In a word: you must be able to distinguish between the growing period and the dormant period, winter type species and summer type species, and provide water at the right time.

Chills

As soon as the summer passed, I felt chilly outside. Seeing the succulents outside in the cold wind at night, I felt so distressed that I quickly moved them back indoors. Before winter came, I immediately added heating facilities for fear that they would freeze.

In fact, succulents are not that pampered. Generally, they can survive the winter safely in an environment above 10 degrees. Just take protective measures when the temperature changes too quickly or drops suddenly, and don't pamper them too much.

In a word: Don't force growth, succulents cannot be pampered.

Sandy loam

This is a very broad concept. Different varieties of succulents have very different requirements for soil. They cannot be dealt with by just a pile of yellow sand. On the contrary, some varieties prefer fertile soil. The sandy loam here refers to a mixed matrix of yellow sand and loam, which should have high air permeability, strong drainage function, and contain certain nutrients.

In a word: soil preparation should follow the principle of combining organic and inorganic.

Only by understanding the cultivation principles of succulents in daily maintenance, combining different situations and accumulating more experience, you will gradually become a succulent expert.
