Tips for improving the survival rate of bougainvillea cuttings

The cutting time of bougainvillea

In order to successfully propagate bougainvillea by cuttings, you first need to choose the right time for cuttings.

Generally speaking, February to April in spring and September to October in autumn are better times for cuttings. The temperature, light and humidity are suitable, and it is not easy to suffer from pests and diseases and death.

However, the best time for cuttings is still in spring, because if cuttings are taken in autumn, they will have to go through winter and may be frostbitten.

Selection of cuttings for bougainvillea

The branches of bougainvillea are generally divided into tender branches and hard branches. Tender branches are generally immature branches grown in the same year. They are relatively small and contain less nutrients, making it more difficult for them to survive. Hard branches are mostly mature, thick and hard branches, usually mature branches that are one year old or older.

When taking cuttings, cut them to the appropriate length, and it is best if the cuttings have more than 3 buds.

Also, in autumn, you can choose hard branch cuttings, and in summer you can choose soft branch cuttings.

Treatment of cuttings of bougainvillea

Processing the branches used for cuttings can increase the survival rate of the cuttings. About 10 days before cuttings, you can make ring cuts at the base of the branches, and spray some potassium dihydrogen phosphate on the leaves the day before cuttings. The cuttings can be soaked in some rooting powder to accelerate their rooting.
